The American Express Centurion Credit Card
For cardholders who believe they’re the ultimate luxury shoppers, and the current selection of credit cards on the market don’t offer enough benefits and features, then the American Express Centurion credit card is for them.
The Centurion card, known to some as “The Black Card” due to its metallic black colour, is considered by many to be the most exclusive card in the world. Consumers cannot simply apply for the Centurion as they would any other card, because it’s by invitation only and “Reserved for existing American Express Card members who have shown the highest level of commitment.” Existing AmEx card members refers to current platinum credit card holders, which is considered to be a stepping stone to the black card.
The Centurion credit card has an exorbitant annual fee of $4,300 and though it’s not required in Australia, the initiation fee in some countries such as the United States is double the annual fee.
Although the fee may sound ludicrous, the benefits and features that accompany the card are just as extravagant. The Centurion has its own travel agency that will arrange all the travel plans requested by a cardholder, plus concierge service that can fulfil a number of peculiar requests. Both services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Centurion card also provides complimentary companion tickets for international flights, in addition to benefits at the most prestigious hotels worldwide such as the Ritz-Carlton. Another benefit is a personal shopper who is provided at high-end retailers such as Escada and Gucci; automatic first-class travel upgrades; and enrolment in airport clubs worldwide.
Centurion card users are automatically enrolled into airline and car rental programs. However, the car rental program is likely for an entourage or luggage, as Centurion cardholders are likely to ride in a chauffeur driven limo while on travels; which can be arranged by the travel agents.
A longstanding rumour about the black card is the absence of spending limits; however, this is slightly untrue. Though there is no flat universal limit, each user has their own individual limit based on a number of factors. If users spend over that limit or approach it, and still make all the necessary payments, the limit will be extended for the next period.
To be eligible for a Centurion invitation, card users are required to spend in the range of $200,000 and $250,000 per annum. They must also have a flawless credit report and substantial assets.
The Centurion credit card is not for everyone, as the annual fee is extremely high and the interest rate fluctuates frequently. Only the top earners and spenders are able to enjoy this luxury card’s benefits.
