Must Know Information Before Applying for a Student Credit Card

Student credit cards are usually the first credit cards young adults carry. While a first credit card is a sign of freedom, young adults should understand what this decision entails.

Credit cards and other finances should never be controlled by carelessness and recklessness. Students should evoke some key factors when applying for a credit card.

It’s understandable that students will not have a credit card limit that extends into the thousands. Lenders will most likely impose a limit no greater than $1,000, yet students should aim for the lower end of the available limits. A low limit permits students to “test the waters” and see how efficiently their card repayments can be made. If cardholders soon reach their limit, and have difficulties making repayments, this is an indicator that a credit increase is not plausible.

When applying for a credit card, applicants should asses their past handling of debt, if any. This debt can include anything from friend and family loans to auto loans. Did the applicant constantly have excuses as to why they could not make the scheduled payments? Did the loan take long to repay due to poor budgeting? Was cash available, but other expenses were deemed to be of greater importance? If so, this should alert the prospective cardholder that they may not be sufficiently responsible for a credit card yet.

If applicants have a difficult time keeping up with their debit card, repeatedly spending more money than is available in their account and therefore overdrawing, a credit card could lead to more trouble and be financially lethal. However, if debit card users are continuously aware of the funds available in their account and use it sparingly, a credit card should not pose a problem.

Student credit card applicants should also ask themselves, “Do I plan to work anytime in the near future?” Income is critical to the successful management of credit card debt, whether the funds are from a part-time job, investment, or parents. The items paid for with the credit card must be repaid shortly.

A student credit card is a serious responsibility. Students should not fill out an application until they are sure they possess the maturity, responsibly, and means to successfully manage a credit card. Otherwise, students may set their finances off on a bad foot, consequently damaging their developing credit report. When taken seriously, credit cards can provide great resources and enhanced security for students and their parents.
